This isn’t about who shouts louder or spends more. It’s about hitting the right message at the right time. Word-of-mouth still works. When you make something that matters, people share. That trust spreads when you ask them to.

Those advocates need something simple. A piece of media they can send right away: “This thing you’re looking for? Here it is. And it’s local.” No fluff—just a tool to connect people to what counts.

The problem is, most independents aren’t showing what makes them different. They rely on outdated or generic content, while corporate players stay sharp and visible. The value’s there—it’s just not being shown in a personal way.

Not a fan of the label “Hero Video”

When we strip away the need to impress, what we’re left with is something far more solid: a story that doesn’t scream for attention, but earns it. It’s not about crafting a hero—it’s about revealing what’s real and letting that be enough. In a crowded world, there’s strength in simply being a mainstay.

Mainstay for me are grounded pieces that show what a business actually is right now. The people, the service, the trust. Not just for looks, but for use. It starts with listening to what’s actually happening on the ground, then building something that helps attract the right customers, reinforce trust, and give people a reason to choose them.

Main Street is fragile. If we lose those local anchors, we lose alternatives and without alternatives, competition dies. We risk slipping into mediocrity, where every service is indistinguishable. But when we have a choice, when we can put our dollars toward distinct, independent, personality-driven businesses, we keep a sense of place alive.

Last fall, I had the opportunity to interview Tom Prochaska. In honoring Tom’s life, I wanted to share his film—and acknowledge what it’s meant to step into this gallery, to be welcomed into its community, and to witness artists like him up close.

For the past two years, I’ve been making short films with the artists of Froelick Gallery—printmakers, painters, sculptors, charcoal artists—people who spend their lives turning raw material and blank canvas into something lived. These aren’t traditional interviews. They’re closer to micro-documentaries, shaped by proximity and observation rather than explanation.

I’ve had the privilege of defending and celebrating artists through this work. It’s an unusual responsibility—shaping their narratives and offering viewers a brief window into their worlds. To let them be seen as they are—that’s both the pleasure and the weight of it, and it’s not something I take lightly.

I take these films personally. I approach their work with the same respect I’d expect if another filmmaker were telling my story. I let the artist lead, and I shape the film as if I were on the other side because that’s exactly how I’d want to be treated.

The work begins with restraint.

I don’t approach these projects trying to master an artist’s story. If anything, my goal is to avoid imposing too much structure too early. I show up knowing as little as possible. That choice is deliberate. It allows me to encounter the work and the artist in the same way an audience might—without preconception, without a fixed narrative already forming in my head.

This creates a different kind of dynamic. Instead of directing the story, I find myself discovering it. Often, somewhere in the middle of filming, the piece begins to reveal its own shape. It’s rarely obvious. It might surface through a shift in tone, a passing comment, or a moment of hesitation. Those are the signals I follow. At that point, my role changes—from leading to navigating.

Framing the artist becomes the central challenge.

Each film needs a point of view that can speak to two audiences at once: those already familiar with the artist and those encountering them for the first time. That balance is intuitive, but it carries weight. Once a perspective is chosen, it defines how the artist will be seen. There’s very little room for correction after the fact. The task is straightforward in theory and difficult in practice: get it right without overengineering it.

Most artists are not inclined to explain their work - lean into that!

Not because they lack insight, but because their understanding exists outside of language. Their process is built through repetition, instinct, and time. Years of practice don’t always translate cleanly into words. When asked to articulate what they do, many artists are being pulled into a form that doesn’t naturally fit their way of thinking.

That’s where the filmmaking process becomes less about questioning and more about environment.

If you approach an artist with rigid structure and direct demands for clarity, you tend to get performance rather than honesty. To counter that, I lower the stakes of the interaction. I keep things loose. I interrupt. I double back. I let moments run longer than they should. Sometimes I make small, intentional missteps—talking over someone, asking them to repeat a thought—because it breaks the rhythm of a formal interview.

What emerges from that looseness is something closer to the truth.

When the pressure drops, people stop performing. They settle into themselves. That’s when the material becomes usable—not because it’s polished, but because it’s real.

What the artist ultimately provides is vulnerability.

When I first walked into Froelick Gallery, my plan was simple: pitch Charles Froelick on an interview project. Instead, he kind of turned the tables around and asked me if I could create a video for his artists. Since then, he’s become more than a valued client—he’s a creative ally who trusts my judgment. He’s given me the freedom to experiment, even to fail. That kind of trust takes real courage, and it’s shaped how I work.

Charles has represented the works of Tom Prochaska for decades—and continues to today—along with all the other artists featured in the films in this article.

Keepers of Portland | What Courage
A series of IRL conversations kicks off on July 20th with the first one being hosted at Froelick Gallery in the Pearl District.

What started as a series of impromptu interview sessions has now led to the first real-life conversational gathering—where Keepers come together in person to share space, stories, and the weight of trekking through everything it’s taken to keep showing up for Portland.

The gathering is called What Courage—a title that speaks both as a statement and a signal. It honors the unsung locals who’ve carried more than their share, and it shines like a searchlight, asking: Who’s still here? Who’s still showing up? And what courage is left to draw from now?

What Courage
isn’t about optimism.
It’s about telling it straight.

And it’s not about finding answers.
It’s about doing the harder work—of asking better questions, together.

What are we really holding on for?
Who are we still showing up for?
And what would it take—for any of this to feel worth it again?

That’s what What Courage is for.
Not to fix the city overnight.
Saying the quiet part out loud plainly.
To see who shows up in the room.
To look each other in the eye.
To check in with someone who needs to be seen—and who sees you.
Someone who recognizes the table stakes you’ve planted in your town.
